    Description

My Ancestors Came  with the Conqueror
Those Who Did, and Some of Those Who Probably Did  Not
    Anthony J. Camp
    Softbound volume totaling
    89
pages. Book  is in excellent condition. Just  what you need for genealogy research.
This little gem by the Director of the Society of  Genealogists (London) contains a consolidated list of the Companions of William  the Conqueror and is in effect a synthesized edition of the famous Battle Abbey  Roll. In addition to being the most comprehensive version of the Battle Abbey  Roll ever compiled, it includes three scholarly papers which discuss the  validity of the evidence and form a basis for testing conclusions. Mr. Camp also  references those Companions of the Conqueror whose names appear in the
    Domesday Book
of 1086 and cross-references from the Roll to the Duchess of  Cleveland's three-volume work on the Battle Abbey Roll and Lewis Loyd's
    Origins of Some Anglo-Norman Families

City and business directories may be one of the most underused genealogical sources available.
    D
irectories provide an unmatched source for finding the exact place a person lived, and they often
    function as a
    surrogate source of information
about residents for a particular time period.
    ·
This 1851 business directory lists merchants, doctors and attorneys from
    137 Virginia
cities and counties (41 of which are in present day West Virginia).
    ·
    It includes
    nearly 7,500 different businesses
    , in 66 different categories.
    ·
Details for each entry include (when available
) name of business, owner of business,
    location (county, city, town, street).
    ·
For this 1851 summary, the original directories have been transcribed, input into a
    database, and extracted to a
    searchable and printable table
    .
    ·
Two versions of the table are included:
    A) The first is
sorted by name of business owner
    .
    B) The second version is grouped by present day
    VA and WV areas
    ,
    then
    sorted by county
, grouped by business type, then sorted by
    owner name
    .
    ·
The information contained in this directory provides an educational and
very interesting picture of mid-nineteenth century Virginia a decade before
    the Civil War.
    ·
From a genealogical perspective, having business owner names enables
identifying location and occupation of nearly 7,500 individuals.
Example - Early Grayson County settlers in 1793 included Phipps, Osborne,
    Wade and Hash families.
In 1851 Jackson Hash was a Grayson business owner, and Wyatt Wade was
    in nearby Montgomery County
    ·
The number of businesses are an indication of the population locations and relative importance of the individual counties.
    ·
From a social perspective, the types of businesses provide unique insights into every-day life of the times.
    ·
    Examples:
    ·
    ·
Six business types comprised 80% of the total businesses
(Dry Goods, Physicians, Attorneys, Hotels, Manufactures, Grocers).
    ·
    ·
The 1,460 Physicians ranked #2 in volume behind Dry Goods, but
there were only 28 dentists in the state (1 in WV).
    ·
    ·
There was one telegraph company in the state (Alexandria County).
The telegraph was patented in the US in 1837.
    ·
    ·
West Virginia counties had no tobacco industry, cotton mfg, millinery
    stores, bakeries, newspapers or auctioneers.
    ·
    ·
There were 24 "Houses of Private Entertainment"; the 9 in WV were all in Brooke County.
