  • Condition: This is a paperback book. The binding is solid. There is some wear, staining and soiling of the paper covers and slight curl to the corners of the covers. The paper over the spine has darkened considerably and a small amount of paper has been lost at the bottom of the spine. (See photo #6.) Portions of the front cover have also darkened slightly. There is slight spotting to the page edges. There is no writing, or highlighting, or underlining, in the book. It is not ex-library nor ex-libris. This book may have a very slightly musty odor. Please see photos. Sold as is.

    Up for sale is a very scarce book containing the specific events and transactions that came before six different notaries in French Canada (New France) during the 18th century (prior to the conclusion of the French and Indian War).  It contains very valuable genealogical and historical information.

    This volume contains the records of six different notaries.  For each, it has a brief biography of the notary, followed by a list, with descriptions, of the documents that he notarized, followed by an index of the names of the persons who are mentioned in those documents.  The six notaries, and their years of notarial practice are:
    Pierre Rousselot (1737 - 1756)
    Barthelemy Verreau (1711 - 1718)
    Francois Coron (1721 - 1732)
    J.-H. Bouron (1750 - 1760)
    Charles-D. Desmarest (1753 - 1754)
    Philippe-P. Pilliamet (1755-1758)
    The series "Inventaire des Greffes des Notaires du Regime Francais" comprises 32 volumes.  The last two pages of this Volume have an alphabetical list of all the notaries covered in the series (at least through the issuance of this, Volume 23).
    Volumes 1 through 27 were compiled by the Roys (Pierre-Georges and Antoine) between 1943 and 1976.  Volumes 28 through 32 were prepared at the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivieres.

    by Brent Holcomb. Published by the author in 1986. Measures approx. 8-3/8 ins. x 10-7/8 ins. with 62 pages in stiff paper covers. Good condition with light handling wear and a few tiny stray marks to cover. Some light soil and tiny nick to spine. Internally clean save for one page that has some pencil check marks and some pencil notations on a few maps. Corner of page 23/24 was turned down at some point, possibly as a page marker and is long since flattened. Still a standard reference and essential title for anyone doing genealogical research in South Carolina.
